Bridging the Digital Divide

  • Video transcript

The digital divide is the gap that exists for families who are not able to participate in the virtual world because they lack adequate hardware, connectivity and mentoring opportunities.

EY is acting to reduce this gap in K-12 students by working with existing organizations throughout the US to deliver solutions to increase broadband connectivity, provide much needed hardware and connect students with valuable mentoring.

As EY continues to look toward the future, our efforts will focus on three time horizons:

Now: by collaborating with nonprofit organizations to support broadband connectivity and provide digital devices for students.

Next: by focusing our virtual mentoring approach on building digital literacy and supporting students to navigate the virtual world.

And beyond: by enabling a strong network that supports underserved K-12 students and provides them with diverse mentoring programs on future skills readiness that will help increase their opportunities to achieve higher education and transform communities.

EY is committing over 40,000 hours of mentoring, in addition to consulting services, as well as working with the United Way campaign to funnel donations from our people to help bridge the digital divide.

We are committed to bridging the digital divide. Go to our website to learn how you can help.

Challenging ourselves

Reviewing our internal talent and business practices to further advance equity across race. The practices in scope include Talent Attraction and Acquisition and Talent Development, including onboarding, coaching and counseling, career advancement, and learning and development.

  • Advisory councils

Two advisory councils of EY partners and principals help drive our progress. One council is focused on the internal talent and business processes and one is focused on our external policy change and engagement.

  • People Advisory Services (PAS) internal assessment

We aim to better understand the experiences of our people and identify processes and areas where we can improve, to provide consistent experiences and equitable opportunities for all of our people.

    • Business function review

PAS is working with the leaders of our internal business functions that support the operations of the firm to review demographic data and employee experiences. Reports of the findings will highlight representation, inclusiveness and belonging experiences, as well as a set of recommendations for leaders to build action plans.

    • Talent life cycle review

PAS is examining the Talent functions, such as onboarding, learning, coaching, and career development processes, to make sure these are applied equitably across all of our people.

  • Internal anti-racism microsite

To enable a two-way collaboration and improve transparency, an internal anti-racism microsite creates space for all of our people to share their personal stories and experiences, pitch ideas to leadership, and find the resources to truly learn, understand and be anti-racist together.

Making social justice investments

EY is proud to support community organizations working to create the just and equitable world in which we all want to live. Since 2020, EY and the Ernst & Young Foundation have invested over $10 million to organizations dedicated to addressing the root causes of inequity, discrimination and/or racism. In order to ensure this giving is sustainable, in 2021 the EY Social Justice Fund was established.

Investing in our communities

Investing in our communities through employee volunteer programs and EY-sponsored anti-racism activities, including declaring August 28, 2020, as a paid day of service for any US professionals participating in the March on Washington, DC commemorating the 57th anniversary of the historic civil rights march. Starting in 2021, EY began observing Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Day as a firmwide paid holiday. US professionals can choose to participate in EY-sponsored anti-racism activities throughout the year, including on MLK Day.

Investing in our communities

Driving policy change

Using our powerful platform to drive policy change as well as lead actions for change in our communities with our vendors and others with whom we do business.

All these actions would be completely disingenuous if we didn’t continue to challenge our own internal efforts. We need to have a different conversation on what it means to have a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture to drive further and faster change. As part of that, we need to look critically at how we recruit, develop, promote and educate our people on what it means to be anti-racist.
